MUST: A pioneer of Taiwan’s semiconductor future

Minghsin University of Science and Technology has a rich history rooted in the country’s drive for economic growth and industrial talent cultivation. Founded in 1954 by a group of leading academics, MUST has set the standard for science and technology education in the country.

MUST told GMI POST that it will soon be expanding its reach by launching the International Specialized Education Department, aims to attract overseas students and enhance Taiwan’s talent pool.

Additionally, the university marked a significant milestone with the establishment of its Doctoral Program in Semiconductor Technology, reflecting its commitment to advancing in this critical field.

MUST’s focus on semiconductor education is particularly noteworthy. Students receive hands-on training using machinery that mirrors the equipment in semiconductor factories located around Hsinchu, Taiwan’s so-called Silicon Valley. This practical approach ensures that graduates are ready to meet the demands of the industry from day one.

Prominent semiconductor companies, such as Powertech Technology, ASE Technology Holding, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), frequently offer internship opportunities to MUST students, further enhancing their real-world experience.

The university’s Semiconductor School, often referred to as a “mini TSMC,” is dedicated to rapidly producing industry-ready professionals, addressing the ongoing talent shortage that Taiwanese tech companies face.

MUST’s proactive approach to education addresses Taiwan’s growing concerns about a talent shortage in the semiconductor sector. With the nation’s declining birthrate amid rising demand for skilled workers, MUST plays a crucial role in developing the next generation of experts. Its focus on collaboration between academia and industry is essential to maintaining Taiwan’s competitive edge in the global semiconductor market.
