The National University of Battambang: Advancing education and innovation

Located in northwestern Cambodia, the National University of Battambang was founded in 2007 by Samdech Kralahom Sar Kheng, the Supreme Counselor of King Norodom Sihamoni, to provide higher education opportunities to students in rural areas, nurture the country’s future leaders, and strengthen local communities, especially in the nearby provinces of Pursat, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap

Led by Board Chairman Abhisantibindit Sar Sokha, who is also the country’s deputy prime minister and interior minister, NUBB has reaffirmed its commitment to developing Cambodia’s human resources in line with priorities to narrow the knowledge gap between the urban and rural population.

Our vision includes building the capacity of NUBB’s young researchers and educators to the doctoral level, developing programs related to smart agriculture technology, organizing international conferences with partner universities in Japan, and conducting joint research projects for sustainable development.

By assuming the leadership of NUBB, Sokha continues the legacy of his father, the university’s founder, and hopes to become an example of public service to other officials, teachers, and the youth.

NUBB collaborates with local communities, government and non-governmental organizations, companies, and consortium universities in the region and worldwide. It wants to become a leading multidisciplinary and research-oriented institution at par with regional and international counterparts.

To achieve that goal, NUBB has participated in numerous national, regional, and international projects to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Its research has also been adapted into management tools and applied to local communities.

NUBB Rector Sok Khorn highlighted the university’s collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), under the Project for Strengthening Engineering Education and Research for Industrial Development in Cambodia (Laboratory Based Education Project).

“NUBB is recently collaborating with University of Fukui, L.A Imaging LLC, Tokyo Polytechnic University, and Hiroshima University under the scope of JICA-SATREPS projects focusing on Smart Agricultural technology,” Khorn said.

“Our team consists of researchers and educators in agriculture, information technology, electrics, electronics and automation, and education who can offer relevant expertise to support the C-Agri’s Joint Research Program, which will benefit both Cambodians and Japanese and support their economic growth,” he added.

Looking ahead, Khorn envisions further strengthening the university’s capabilities.

National University of Battambang (NUBB), Cambodia's largest public university in the northwest of the country.

“It is crucial that NUBB equip competent researchers and educators and laboratory equipment in the respective fields Our vision includes building the capacity of NUBB’s young researchers and educators to the doctoral level, developing programs related to smart agriculture technology, organizing international conferences with partner universities in Japan, and conducting joint research projects for sustainable development,” he said.

NUBB is also exploring partnerships with Japanese industries focused on technology transfer projects and student internships.

“These strategies will not only introduce new technologies but also provide learning opportunities for our young researchers, educators, and students. This collaboration will mutually benefit both the partner Japanese industries and NUBB’s students,” Khorn said.

As it grows in size and improves its quality, NUBB aims to produce qualified graduates who meet the labor demands and contribute to local and national economic development.

“With the continuously improving number and capacity of officials and researchers and supporting infrastructure, NUBB will gradually improve its institutional capacity and play its role as a specialized service provider in academia and research in multidisciplinary fields, especially agriculture, technology, electronics, electrics, and automation,” Khorn said.
