PNG’s Judith Cunningham Munro: Leadership with heart

For nearly three decades, Markham Culverts CEO Judith Cunningham Munro has nurtured a reputation for resilience, integrity, and competence in an industry traditionally dominated by men.

Having built a successful career in Australia, Munro visited Papua New Guinea to help oversee the operations of Markham Culverts, which her father established in 1972 and later sold to his daughter.

Papua New Guinea is a new frontier in many ways; and with great risk comes great reward.

What was meant to be a short visit became a lifelong commitment as she took the reins. Raised in PNG since she was seven years old, Munro got to know very well the culture, language, and people of the country.

“Papua New Guinea is a new frontier in many ways; and with great risk comes great reward. Companies looking to invest (here) can expect many tax breaks since it’s an emerging economy,” Munro explained.

Looking beyond financial success, Munro’s leadership style involves a deep respect for local traditions and sincere concern for her employees and their families. Apart from providing a steady income, she also lends support for the education of their children.

“Better education means better lives for everybody,” she stressed.

In its mission to develop the economy, PNG can depend on business leaders like Munro, who will help build a stable future one culvert, one employee, and one community at a time.
