Binghamton University taps Anne D’Alleva as eighth president

The State University of New York Board of Trustees has selected Anne D’Alleva, currently serving as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Connecticut, to become the eighth president of Binghamton University. D’Alleva expressed her appreciation and enthusiasm for her new role, stating that she is “deeply honored to accept the position of president of Binghamton University and to join the distinguished SUNY system.” She affirmed her admiration for the university’s long-standing dedication to academic excellence, cutting-edge research, and community engagement, and emphasized her commitment to collaborating with campus and community stakeholders to strengthen research capabilities, broaden student opportunities, enhance alumni involvement, and elevate the university’s influence across New York, the nation, and the world.

At UConn, D’Alleva has been a driving force in advancing student success and spearheading multidisciplinary initiatives in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and quantum technologies, while also extending academic offerings at UConn’s regional campuses and forging partnerships with Connecticut’s tribal nations. Her leadership has encompassed strategic planning, budget oversight, faculty development, and curriculum innovation across UConn’s fourteen schools and colleges.

D’Alleva’s appointment follows the retirement announcement of her predecessor, Harvey Stenger, who had led Binghamton University since 2012. Governor-appointed presidential search committee members—including representatives from faculty, students, alumni, the university foundation, other SUNY campuses, and the Chancellor’s Office—guided the rigorous evaluation process.

Outgoing president Stenger commended the choice, highlighting D’Alleva’s reputation as a multidisciplinary research collaborator and an administrator capable of developing innovative support systems that bolster student success. SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. echoed this confidence, noting that under Stenger, Binghamton strengthened its academic reputation and grew in research capacity, and he expressed assurance that D’Alleva will build on that foundation to elevate Binghamton even further.

Anne D’Alleva marks both continuity and transformation for Binghamton University. As a seasoned administrator with deep experience in multidisciplinary academic leadership and inclusivity, she brings both institutional wisdom and bold vision. Her track record at UConn—spanning advanced research in AI and quantum technologies, tribal and regional partnerships, and student-centered innovation—aligns with Binghamton’s ambitions for growth and deeper impact. Her appointment underscores SUNY’s commitment to sustaining and building on Binghamton’s ascent as a leading public research university.
