Butler University will debut a groundbreaking program in 2027: Butler Overseas. This new program will enable students to earn a bachelor’s degree in just three years while studying across six continents. Designed as the first of its kind among accredited U.S. universities, Butler Overseas aims to shape globally fluent leaders equipped to tackle challenges like climate change and sustainability.
The inaugural cohort of 30 to 40 students will choose between two academic pathways: a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies with a minor in International Business, or a Bachelor of Science in International Business with a minor in Environmental Studies. Students will begin with a two-month summer term at Butler’s Indianapolis campus before embarking on a structured global journey. Their experience will include six international semesters and three summers at Butler, spanning locations such as London, Rome, South Africa, Sydney, Mérida, Buenos Aires, and Kandy, with instruction delivered through hybrid learning in partnership with Butler faculty and the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA).
University President James Danko framed Butler Overseas as a transformative opportunity: “Butler Overseas provides a transformative opportunity for students seeking a global college experience that opens doors to the world,” he said. “As global challenges continue to grow, we need well‑educated, culturally fluent leaders who can collaborate across borders to create meaningful solutions. Butler Overseas is designed for highly motivated students who want to make a lasting impact.”

The program builds on Butler’s strong national reputation in international education. The university recently climbed to No. 24 in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings for study abroad, with nearly 40% of students studying abroad before graduation and a second-place national ranking in faculty-led programs.
