AES Ohio unveils $175M substation to power Honda EV battery plant

AES Ohio, one of the leading electric companies in Dayton, Ohio,  has unveiled its largest infrastructure project to date: the $175 million Fayette Substation. Designed to supply power to the new Honda-LG Energy Solution (LGES) electric vehicle (EV) battery plant and other local businesses, this substation underscores AES Ohio’s commitment to supporting the state’s industrial growth and sustainable energy future.

Strategically located near Fent Road Northwest and Milledgeville-Jeffersonville Road Northwest in Fayette County, the 20-acre facility connects two parallel 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines, providing robust power distribution for residences and businesses in the region. With a 140 megavolt amperes (MVA) load capacity, the substation is poised to meet the growing demands of local development projects.

“This is a mega-site milestone in our growth strategy,” said Mary Ann Kabel, AES Ohio’s spokeswoman. She emphasized the substation’s critical role in powering Honda’s EV battery plant, which will begin producing lithium-ion battery cells in 2025. The facility, with an annual production capacity of 40GWh, will exclusively supply Honda’s EV operations in North America, positioning Ohio as a key player in the EV industry.

The Fayette Substation is just the first phase of a broader infrastructure plan. AES Ohio aims to complete a second substation in Jeffersonville, Indiana, by 2026, replacing an aging facility. By 2028, the company plans to establish a network of substations across Fayette County, Jeffersonville, and Octa, enhancing power distribution and supporting regional industrial expansion.

This investment reflects AES Ohio’s dedication to fostering growth and sustainability in the state. By addressing the increasing energy needs of industries like automotive and beyond, the Fayette Substation positions Ohio as a hub for innovation and clean energy development.

With these ambitious projects, AES Ohio is paving the way for a more connected and energy-efficient future, supporting industrial growth while driving sustainable innovation.
