ArcelorMittal to Invest $1.2B in Alabama for advanced steel plant, creating 1,500 jobs

ArcelorMittal will invest $1.2 billion to build an advanced steel manufacturing facility in Mobile County, Alabama, producing up to 150,000 metric tons annually of non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NOES) used in electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.

Governor Kay Ivey announced the project, which will create over 200 permanent jobs and up to 1,300 construction jobs. The plant will support domestic production of NOES, reduce reliance on imports, and strengthen Alabama’s role in advanced manufacturing. Construction begins in late 2025, with production expected in 2027.

“Iron and steel manufacturing put Alabama on the map,” said Ivey. “This investment supports innovation in electric motors and clean energy while creating high-quality jobs.”

Located near the existing AM/NS Calvert steel mill, the new facility will be wholly owned by ArcelorMittal and equipped with advanced lines for processing specialized steel. The output will serve automakers, renewable energy companies, and other industries relying on high-performance electrical motors.

John Brett, CEO of ArcelorMittal North America, said the facility will help “create a resilient, sustainable domestic supply chain” and meet rising demand for NOES, which is essential for EVs and other energy technologies.

The U.S. Department of Energy has identified NOES as a critical material for clean transportation and grid reliability. Global EV sales topped 10 million in 2023, and demand for domestically produced components continues to grow.

Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair said the investment demonstrates Alabama’s ability to “attract cutting-edge manufacturing projects.” Local officials praised the long-term economic benefits, and U.S. Senator Katie Britt called it “next-generation innovation” that boosts both economic growth and national security.
