Are you afraid of using AI tools?

The fear of unintended plagiarism has deterred many from using AI-assisted research tools. We have read horror stories about public figures copying parts of speeches made by other famous personalities. Whether plagiarism was intentional or not, the shame associated with stealing someone else’s work has become a major hindrance to employing AI tools.

While the anxiety is valid, the use of such AI applications may not necessarily lead to plagiarism. These types of tech are here to stay and are meant to enhance human productivity.

So, how does one take advantage of AI tools without feeling anxious or guilty?

Here are GMI POST’s recommendations to help enhance your research and learning experience:

1. Fireflies

Fireflies automatically transcribes and summarizes your online meetings. For researchers who conduct focus-group discussions and individual online interviews, this tool is a godsend. Just keep in mind that the participants are made aware of its presence and must give their consent to be recorded.

Before starting the online session, it would be best to secure from interviewees and participants their permission to be quoted and credited. Ask also if they will want a preview of any content that uses their quotes.

2. OpenAI

The group’s applications help initiate the research process through brainstorming. In the pre-Google and AI era, people flocked to libraries to gather information on their research topics. What took hours to be accomplished in the past can now be done in a matter of seconds.

While it can be tempting to assume its results as accurate, OpenAI points out that results might not be up-to-date. Always remember to qualify your field of research and narrow the parameters of your desired results. The more specific and focused, the better.

Educating one’s self about the capabilities and limitations of these tools can eliminate any worry associated with the use of AI. Developing personal best practices can protect your productivity and credibility.
