New York City is taking a significant step toward a sustainable future with the announcement of BATWorks, a $100 million climate innovation hub at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park. Mayor Eric Adams and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) have partnered with the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) and the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) to design and operate this cutting-edge facility.
Spanning approximately 200,000 square feet, BATWorks aims to serve as a catalyst for climate technology development, supporting 150 startups over the next decade. The hub is projected to create over 600 jobs and generate $2.6 billion in economic impact for the city. It will offer startups space for research and development, as well as workforce training and job placement programs for New Yorkers.
LACI will lead the “Pilots at BAT” program, allowing emerging climate tech companies to test their products in a live environment. CIC will focus on designing work and laboratory spaces to support innovation and attract startups. The consortium also includes the City University of New York (CUNY), New York University (NYU), and architecture firm Perkins and Will.
In addition to the hub, NYCEDC has awarded $1.4 million to the South Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation to lead an Economic Mobility Network in Sunset Park. This initiative aims to connect local residents to good-paying jobs in innovative industries, such as life sciences and the green economy.
BATWorks is a key component of Mayor Adams’ Green Economy Action Plan, which seeks to transform New York City’s waterfront into a “Harbor of the Future” and position the city as a leader in climate innovation.
“BATWorks will unlock new opportunities for startups and entrepreneurs, advance new innovative climate solutions, fuel job growth, and strengthen Brooklyn’s working waterfront—all while training New Yorkers of all backgrounds for green-collar jobs,” said NYCEDC President and CEO Andrew Kimball.

With BATWorks, New York City is solidifying its commitment to combating climate change and fostering a resilient, inclusive green economy.
