Brooklyn’s Broadway Junction transformed: New civic hub anchors $300M investment in East New York

New York City has unveiled a transformative development at 2440 Fulton Street, marking a significant milestone in the revitalization of East New York’s Broadway Junction. The 400,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art commercial building, designed by Marvel Architects and developed by the Leser Group in partnership with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), serves as a new civic anchor for the area.

This development is a cornerstone of Mayor Eric Adams‘ “City Agencies Revitalizing the Economy” (CARE) strategy, aimed at stimulating economic growth in underserved neighborhoods through strategic placement of city offices and services. The building will house over 1,100 employees from the Department of Social Services’ Human Resources Administration (DSS-HRA), consolidating nearly a dozen programs previously spread across Brooklyn. Services offered will include Cash Assistance, SNAP, Medicaid, and Fair Fares, enhancing accessibility for local residents.

In addition to government services, the facility introduces over 80,000 square feet of private-market retail space, creating new job opportunities and providing quality retail options for the community.

This project is part of a broader $300 million investment in the Broadway Junction area, encompassing public-space developments, affordable housing, and job creation initiatives. The comprehensive plan is expected to generate $11.6 billion in economic impact and create over 2,300 jobs, with a focus on local hiring.

Mayor Adams emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “With the opening of this 400,000 square-foot building at 2440 Fulton Street, we are bringing 1,100 Department of Social Services employees to offer services like Cash Assistance, SNAP, Medicaid, and Fair Fares and opening 80,000 square-feet of retail space to bring good-paying jobs and quality retail options to the neighborhood.”

The Broadway Junction transit hub, serving multiple subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road, is central to this revitalization effort. The area is poised to become a thriving economic center, reflecting the city’s commitment to equitable development and community investment.
