Cambodia’s rise as a hub for education and cultural immersion

With its rich culture, affordable tourism, and expanding education sector, Cambodia is attracting a growing number of international students. The country’s stunning landscapes, world-renowned archaeological sites like Angkor Wat, and unique cuisine—infused with Thai, Indian, Teochew, and French influences—make it a compelling destination for travelers and young scholars alike.

For students seeking more than a brief holiday, studying in Cambodia provides the chance to immerse themselves in a distinctive culture while pursuing higher education recognized throughout ASEAN and beyond. Backed by the government’s commitment to quality education, Cambodian universities offer access to ASEAN networks and foster valuable international partnerships.

The Cambodian Education Forum, in a 2022 report, emphasized that the nation’s universities are well-equipped to welcome foreign students, reflecting the country’s progress in advancing its educational system. A key institution drawing global attention is the National University of Management (NUM).

NUM offers English-taught degrees delivered by both Cambodian faculty members who have studied abroad and international lecturers, including faculty from Japan. The programs span digital economy, international business, global entrepreneurship, and language training for non-native English speakers, aligning with the Ministry of Education’s goal to integrate ICT into higher education.

“NUM has partnerships with prominent institutions such as Kanazawa University, University of Fukui, University of Tsukuba, Osaka University of Law and Economics, and Kobe University, supporting faculty and student exchanges, research projects, and scholarship programs,” shared NUM Rector Dr. Hor Peng. These collaborations have significantly strengthened Cambodia’s ties with Japan, with companies like Sumitomo partnering with NUM since 1999, providing scholarships that have benefited over 1,000 Cambodian students.

“NUM has made strides in internationalization through partnerships with global networks like Erasmus+, GBSN, AUN, AUF, and CORE Economic, as well as inclusion in international university rankings (WURI) and expanded student exchange and dual degree programs,” noted Dr. Hor Peng.

Internships in Japanese-Cambodian companies within special economic zones (SEZs) provide students with practical experience that enhances their career prospects.

For Japanese students, Cambodia offers a path to develop world-class skills in a peaceful and welcoming environment, with NUM supporting their growth through active learning and research. The university emphasizes personal development in essential skills such as research, analysis, writing, presentation, and leadership, preparing students for success in a competitive global landscape.
