Carnegie Mellon leads U.S. News 2026 graduate rankings

Carnegie Mellon University secured six No. 1 rankings in the 2026 Best Graduate Schools rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, reinforcing its position as a global leader in technology, business, and the arts.

The university ranked first overall in graduate computer science, tying with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. Within the discipline, Carnegie Mellon also placed No. 1 in programming languages, artificial intelligence and systems, while ranking No. 2 in theory alongside University of California Berkeley.

Its strength in information technology extended beyond computer science. Carnegie Mellon ranked No. 1 in information systems in the business school category, tied with University of Texas at Austin, and No. 1 in information and technology management within public affairs programs.

In business-related fields, the university placed No. 2 in business analytics, alongside Columbia University and Stanford, and No. 5 in supply chain and logistics, tied with Cornell University and University of Chicago. Engineering and creative disciplines also performed strongly, with Carnegie Mellon ranking No. 4 in computer engineering and No. 2 in fine arts, tied with Rhode Island School of Design, University of California Los Angeles and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The university recorded top 10 placements across a wide range of programs, including statistics, public policy analysis, electrical engineering, production and operations, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, entrepreneurship and environmental policy. It also ranked No. 10 overall among U.S. engineering schools.

Performance in online education further strengthened its position. Earlier in 2026, Carnegie Mellon’s part-time business analytics program ranked No. 1 among non-MBA online business programs, while its hybrid MBA program placed No. 2.

The results highlight Carnegie Mellon’s continued investment in interdisciplinary programs aligned with industry demand, particularly in artificial intelligence, data science and technology management. The university was also ranked No. 4 for Most Innovative Schools in the 2026 undergraduate rankings, underscoring its broader role in shaping emerging fields and workforce development.
