Florida Atlantic University is expanding its footprint in smart infrastructure research with the launch of the Ubicquia Innovation Center for Intelligent Infrastructure (UICII), supported by a $1.5 million gift from the Aaron Family Foundation and Fort Lauderdale–based technology firm Ubicquia, Inc.
The new center, housed within FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, will focus on developing AI-enabled technologies designed to modernize grid systems, strengthen public safety, and improve energy efficiency across urban and industrial environments.
FAU Engineering Dean Stella Batalama described the investment as “a defining milestone,” noting that UICII directly supports the university’s broader “AI-First” research strategy. “This partnership allows us to accelerate scalable solutions that will shape the future of smarter, more resilient communities,” she said.
Ubicquia, known for its AI-powered smart infrastructure platforms, will collaborate with FAU researchers on industrial sensors, real-time analytics, large-language models, and advanced grid-monitoring tools. The initiative aims to equip cities and utilities with improved visibility into power systems and emerging infrastructure vulnerabilities.
The new center builds on FAU’s growing network of energy and technology partnerships, including its recent work with Florida Power & Light through the FPL Center for Intelligent Energy Technologies. Together, the developments position FAU as a statewide leader in applied AI and infrastructure modernization.
FAU President Adam Hasner emphasized the significance of the investment. “This gift accelerates our shared vision for a more connected world,” he said, highlighting that the center will provide hands-on research opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students.
