Fayetteville State University (FSU) has been recognized as a Research University in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications, marking its inaugural inclusion in this category. This distinction underscores FSU’s dedication to advancing research and academic excellence.
The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education evaluates universities based on research and development expenditures and the number of research doctorates awarded. In the 2025 update, FSU is among 218 institutions designated as Research Colleges and Universities. To qualify, institutions must spend at least $2.5 million on research; FSU significantly surpassed this benchmark by allocating $32,927,814 to research and development in the last fiscal year.
Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Monica T. Leach, expressed pride in this achievement. “We are honored to receive the Carnegie Classification as a research university. This designation reflects the dedication and expertise of our faculty and the unwavering commitment of our students. This recognition will not only elevate our institution’s standing in the academic community but will also enhance our ability to attract top-tier talent and secure funding opportunities. As we embrace this new chapter, we remain dedicated to nurturing intellectual curiosity and making meaningful contributions to society,” said Leach.

Chief Research Officer Ganesh Bora attributed this milestone to the unwavering contributions of skilled researchers and students who push the boundaries of knowledge through rigorous research and innovation.
This accomplishment positions FSU to further foster an environment that supports innovation, enriches student experiences, and contributes to impactful discoveries benefiting both local and global communities.
