Greece invests $4.7B in cultural tourism

Greece is committing €4.3 billion (US $4.7 billion) to cultural tourism projects in a nationwide effort to boost regional economies and promote sustainable development. The strategy, jointly announced by Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni and Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni, aims to merge the country’s rich cultural heritage with modern tourism infrastructure.

More than 800 projects are included in the initiative, funded through a combination of national and European Union sources. The goal is to enhance access to archaeological sites, museums, and cultural institutions while expanding tourism services to less-developed areas across the country.

“Culture and tourism are two of the most dynamic sectors of the Greek economy. Their strategic connection enhances the country’s international image and competitiveness,” said Mendoni.

The program focuses on restoration efforts, new cultural routes, improved accessibility, and digital upgrades. It also seeks to integrate tourism with local traditions, including religious sites, gastronomy, and natural landscapes, extending Greece’s appeal beyond seasonal coastal tourism.

Tourism Minister Kefalogianni noted the broader impact on regional cohesion: “By bringing cultural tourism to new areas, we are reinforcing sustainable development while sharing the richness of Greek heritage more widely.”

The investment is supported by the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility and Greece’s National Strategic Reference Framework. It involves coordination with local governments, tourism operators, and cultural bodies to maximize economic and cultural returns.

With cultural tourism already accounting for 40% of global tourism revenue, according to the UN World Tourism Organization, Greece is positioning itself to capture more value by offering deeper, year-round visitor experiences.

The $4.7 billion initiative underscores Greece’s effort to align heritage preservation with economic opportunity, creating a sustainable model that strengthens both culture and commerce.
