How a Bangladeshi university is raising the next generation of leaders

American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) is dedicated to providing students with a holistic learning experience that goes beyond the confines of the traditional curriculum.

Under the leadership of Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Abdur Rahman, AIUB is committed to nurturing skills in their students and preparing them for leadership roles in the future.

Hands-on learning

Dr. Rahman emphasizes the pivotal role of hands-on experience in shaping future leaders.

“Our main focus is on skills development. We need to create leadership for the professional fields. To do that, we provide a strong emphasis on laboratory development. The hands-on experience is a very integral part of our curriculum,” he said.

This commitment to practical learning is reflected in AIUB’s tagline: “Where leaders are created.”

Outside activities

AIUB looks beyond academic excellence by offering a wide variety of extracurricular activities where students take the helm.

“We create a lot of extracurricular activities. Everybody gets the chance to lead because the students run these activities themselves. This is where they learn how to communicate, how to manage, how to do things with seniors, juniors, teachers, and external groups,” Rahman explained.

Faculty and staff excellence

Central to AIUB’s success is its faculty made up of accomplished individuals who are passionate about nurturing the next generation of leaders.

“We prefer teachers who were high achievers when they were students as well. Our minimum qualification here is a master’s degree. We also have PhD holders who have studied in Japan. That’s because we are very conscious of the quality of education we provide,” Rahman said.

AIUB also prioritizes staff retention with a significant portion of its faculty being alumni of the institution.

“Most of our teachers are graduates of AIUB. They are big supporters of the institution, and that provides us with the stability we need,” Rahman said.

This commitment to excellence explains AIUB’s reputation as a leading university in Bangladesh.
