“Deep personal humility” and “intense professionalism”were the traits shared by all successful leaders, according to the renowned American mathematician and researcher Jim Collins in his study of nearly 1,500 Fortune 500 companies titled ‘What Makes Businesses Good to Great.’
Those two traits are evident in the top management of Lae Biscuit Co., which was founded in 1972 by Sir Henry Chow, a prominent business leader whose family has long, deep roots in Papua New Guinea.
The fourth-generation Chow leads one of the largest and most successful business groups in the country. Employing 1,200 workers, he oversees various companies engaged in shipping, engineering, machining, fast food restaurants, real estate, plantations, fishing, logging, and sawmilling, among others.
The family’s inspiring legacy is being carried on by his grandson John Chow, a sixth-generation member of the family who is currently the business director and general manager of the group.
“My grandfather’s legacy lives on, especially throughout our social work and philanthropy, which has a real impact on the community,” John Chow told GMI POST.
Marking its centenary this year, the company remains committed to its foundational principles of responsible ownership, integrity, humility, and passion, as well as its mission to drive sustainable economic development and nurture close relationships with local communities.
