Meta’s Kansas city data center officially goes live

Meta has officially launched operations at its Kansas City, Missouri data center, marking a major milestone in the company’s global infrastructure network. The $1 billion facility, first announced in 2022, is now serving traffic and reinforcing the region’s position as a hub for digital innovation.

The project represents one of Missouri’s largest single technology investments. Construction employed an average of 1,500 skilled trade workers at peak, and the data center will support more than 100 permanent operational jobs. According to the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City (EDCKC), the facility underscores both the strength of the local workforce and the city’s capacity to attract global investment.

Brad Davis, Meta’s Data Center Community and Economic Development Director, said Kansas City was chosen for its strong infrastructure, reliable electrical grid, and skilled talent base. “We are extremely proud to be part of this community, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnership for years to come,” he said.

Local leaders highlighted the project’s long-term economic impact. Tracey Lewis, President and CEO of EDCKC, called the facility “a billion-dollar vote of confidence in our people and our potential.” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas described it as a clear signal of the city’s appeal as a destination for innovation, while Missouri Partnership CEO Subash Alias emphasized the state’s growing ability to attract world-leading companies.

Beyond jobs and infrastructure, Meta has directed more than $1 million in community funding to schools and nonprofits in Clay County, Platte County, and Kansas City since 2022. Beneficiaries include Children’s Mercy Hospital, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, and WeCode KC. The company has also hosted AI-focused Community Accelerator events to support local entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The Kansas City data center is LEED Gold certified and powered by 100% renewable energy. Meta implemented water stewardship measures during construction, including the use of stormwater from onsite retention ponds, saving over one million gallons of potable water.

With the data center now operational, Kansas City has secured its place in Meta’s global network, bringing both economic opportunity and advanced digital infrastructure to the region.
