On February 19, 2025, Governor Gretchen Whitmer concluded a landmark investment mission to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), aiming to bolster Michigan’s aerospace and defense sectors. This initiative is poised to enhance the state’s $30 billion defense industry, which currently supports over 166,000 jobs across nearly 4,000 businesses.
During the mission, Governor Whitmer engaged with industry leaders to position Michigan as a premier destination for aerospace and defense investments. The state’s defense sector contributes approximately $31 billion to its economy, encompassing 155,000 defense-related jobs and housing 17 military commands and installations.
The visit also included participation in the World Government Summit, where Governor Whitmer joined over 30 heads of state and 140 government delegations. She highlighted Michigan’s robust higher education system and its strategic role in the global economy. Emphasizing the state’s commitment to international collaboration, Whitmer stated, “We will continue competing with other states and nations to bring good-paying jobs and projects home to Michigan.”

Quentin L. Messer Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, underscored the significance of the mission, noting that strengthening international partnerships positions Michigan businesses to compete globally. This effort aligns with Michigan’s broader strategy to expand its economic impact and international reach, building upon the state’s existing trade relationships. Between 2019 and 2023, Michigan exported goods worth $3.1 billion to the UAE, ranking 9th among U.S. states.
This mission reflects Michigan’s proactive approach to fostering innovation, creating economic opportunities, and reinforcing its leadership in the aerospace and defense industries on a global scale.
