Mission Economic Development Corporation (Mission EDC) has unveiled a new technology and logistics district aimed at strengthening the Rio Grande Valley’s role in international trade, advanced manufacturing and cross-border logistics.
The initiative, known as MI2D, was introduced by Mission EDC CEO Teclo Garcia during the Rio Grande Valley Partnership’s inaugural RGV Connect event, held at the Center for Education & Economic Development.

Located in Mission, a city of roughly 88,000 residents in Hidalgo County in South Texas, the district is part of the rapidly growing McAllen–Edinburg–Mission metropolitan area, one of the largest economic regions along the U.S.–Mexico border.
Mission’s economy employs approximately 34,000 workers, with major sectors including health care, retail, education and logistics, reflecting the region’s growing role in cross-border trade and services.
Garcia said MI2D is designed to support the growing complexity of global supply chains and manufacturing operations.
“MI2D has been created not just to handle today’s global business, logistics and technology challenges, but to create solutions going forward as international trade, advanced manufacturing and global logistics become more sophisticated, demanding and tech forward,” Garcia said.
The district already benefits from several strategic infrastructure assets, including an international bridge, rail access, interstate connectivity, a foreign trade zone and an overweight corridor. The site is also located near South Texas College’s technology campus in McAllen and roughly 10 minutes from McAllen International Airport, positioning it as a logistics gateway for cross-border commerce.
Several companies and developers have already announced projects within the district, including Killam Development, UDD and Grupo Century Recycling. Garcia said the initiative is expected to attract additional companies and create new employment opportunities as development progresses.
Mission EDC plans to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the district in the coming months, with additional project announcements expected.
Separately, Mission EDC recently received a Certificate of Achievement for Economic Excellence from the Texas Economic Development Council, recognizing the organization’s work in attracting investment, supporting workforce development and strengthening the region’s economic competitiveness.
Garcia said the recognition reflects the efforts of Mission EDC’s staff and partners.
“The statewide recognition is a great way to start what promises to be a strong year for attracting investment, creating jobs, enhancing the workforce and supporting small businesses in Mission,” he said.
