Mitsubishi Electric converts U.S. auto parts facility to cooling systems factory

The continued rise of artificial intelligence has ushered in an era of increased efficiency. Central to this rapid transformation are data centers whose processors and servers generate significant heat and require sophisticated cooling solutions to maintain operational stability.

Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric is tapping into this growing demand by repurposing its U.S. auto parts factory to produce advanced air conditioning equipment for AI-driven data centers.

With an investment exceeding $140 million, Mitsubishi Electric will convert its Kentucky facility, previously focused on engine parts, into a compressor factory by 2026. Compressors are vital components of air-conditioning systems and play a critical role in maintaining the performance of data centers.

“We are seeing a significant shift in demand,” Mitsubishi Electric said in a statement.

The company anticipates a decline in sales of traditional engine parts as the automotive industry moves toward electrification. By shifting its focus to air conditioning systems, Mitsubishi Electric is positioning itself for AI-related growth while reducing its reliance on fossil fuel-dependent technologies.

The company’s decision reflects a broader strategy to reduce the risk caused by fluctuating currency exchange rates and supply chain disruptions. Mitsubishi Electric currently imports compressors from Thailand and Japan to serve the North American market. But, local production will streamline operations and boost efficiency.

As the global economic landscape continues to evolve rapidly, Mitsubishi Electric is poised to retool its other factories, prioritizing growth sectors like air conditioning and industrial robots.
