The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has secured a $4.7 million investment from metal forming technology company Nichols Portland, Inc. (NPI) to expand its manufacturing operations in St. Marys, a move that will create 42 new jobs and retain 285 existing positions.
The expansion includes NPI’s relocation to a larger technology hub and corporate headquarters at the St. Marys Industrial Airport Park, where the company has signed a 10-year lease. The facility will support NPI’s six manufacturing locations, three in Pennsylvania, and serve as a central hub for its global customer base.
“Nichols Portland’s decision to expand here in Pennsylvania will create new opportunities for Pennsylvanians throughout Elk County and strengthen our manufacturing sector,” said Governor Josh Shapiro. “My administration is focused on building a skilled workforce, cutting red tape, and making the kinds of smart, strategic investments that help businesses grow and succeed here in the Commonwealth.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) supported the project with a $300,000 Pennsylvania First grant and a $76,000 WEDnetPA grant for workforce training. Additionally, the City of St. Marys received a $614,000 PA SITES grant to enhance gas and electric infrastructure at the industrial park, further supporting long-term growth.
NPI specializes in advanced metal forming and additive manufacturing technologies, producing powder metal components, smart pumps, and specialty valves for global markets in automotive and industrial sectors.
“With a focus on innovation and technology, we look forward to building NPI’s future in Pennsylvania and beyond,” said Thomas Houck, NPI president and CEO. “This community’s expertise and commitment have been instrumental in making our expansion possible.”
Local leaders hailed the project as a model for regional collaboration, underscoring its role in strengthening Elk County’s manufacturing ecosystem and enhancing Pennsylvania’s competitiveness in advanced manufacturing.
