The Sherman Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) has approved a $500,000 grant to Austin College to support the development of its planned Harris Engineering Center, reinforcing efforts to align education with the region’s expanding semiconductor and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The funding will be used to purchase specialized equipment for the new facility, enabling the college to strengthen its engineering program and deepen partnerships with local industry.
Located in North Texas, Sherman is part of the Texoma region and the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, with a population of approximately 50,000 residents. The city is increasingly recognized as part of the “Silicon Prairie,” a growing hub for technology and advanced manufacturing, supported by strong transportation links, expanding fiber infrastructure and a diverse industrial base.
Sherman is home to operations from major global companies including Texas Instruments, Tyson Foods, Emerson, Eaton, Coherent and GlobiTech, reflecting its long-standing role in manufacturing and technology-driven industries.
SEDCO officials said the investment in Austin College is aimed at addressing workforce demand as these sectors continue to grow.
“With the rapid growth of advanced manufacturing and semiconductor industries in our community, the demand for highly skilled engineers has never been greater,” said Kent Sharp, president and CEO of SEDCO.

“Austin College’s commitment to expanding its engineering program, combined with SEDCO’s support for state-of-the-art training equipment, ensures we are not only meeting today’s workforce needs, but building a sustainable talent pipeline for the future,” he added.
The grant aligns with SEDCO’s broader mission to attract investment, support primary employers and strengthen Sherman’s position as a regional center for advanced manufacturing and technology.
