Spirit Airlines will introduce a new nonstop route between Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) beginning June 13. The twice-weekly service marks the airline’s third destination from BHM in less than a year.
The announcement comes just months after Spirit launched operations at BHM in October 2023 with daily nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale. In addition to Detroit, Spirit also plans to begin nonstop service to Newark Liberty International Airport on June 4.
“We are pleased to see Spirit Airlines making additional investment in our community and providing customers with more choices when they fly,” said Ashby Pate, Board Chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority. “Spirit continues to show tremendous confidence in Birmingham.”

Spirit Airlines, headquartered in Dania Beach, Florida, is a low-cost carrier that has recently expanded its fare offerings to include options for added comfort, such as larger seats and bundled services under its “Go” series of products. The new structure allows passengers to select from basic to more premium travel experiences.
The addition of the Detroit route comes as BHM continues to see growth in passenger traffic. In 2023, the airport recorded more than 3.2 million travelers, a 6% increase over the previous year. BHM currently hosts five commercial airlines operating about 100 flights daily.
