Tarleton elevated to highest accreditation class in Texas higher ed

Tarleton State University has attained Level VI classification from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the highest accreditation level conferred by the agency. This elevation follows the university’s recent expansion of doctoral programs, including the launch of its Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, which welcomed its inaugural cohort this year.

President Dr. James Hurley lauded the achievement, stating, “These milestones are a testament to the unwavering dedication and excellence of our faculty and staff. This new classification further solidifies our institution as a first-choice destination for students to access a high-quality, affordable doctoral education”.

Currently, Tarleton State offers doctoral degrees in educational leadership (Ed.D.), criminal justice (Ph.D.), and animal and natural resource sciences (Ph.D.). The university plans to introduce three additional doctoral programs within the next 18 months, pending SACSCOC approval.

Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Diane Stearns emphasized the broader impact of these programs: “With the addition of these doctoral degree programs comes expanded research opportunities and a sizable economic impact”.

Tarleton State’s commitment to academic excellence was previously recognized in 2021 when it received a 10-year reaffirmation of accreditation from SACSCOC, with no recommendations for improvement or negative findings.

As a founding member of the Texas A&M University System, Tarleton State continues to expand its influence, serving approximately 18,000 students across campuses in Stephenville, Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan, and online. The university remains dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality education that addresses regional, state, and national needs.
