X-energy expands Maryland footprint with new headquarters

X-energy, a pioneer in advanced nuclear reactor and fuel technology, is consolidating its Rockville operations into a 125,000-square-foot headquarters at Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The move will retain 260 jobs while creating more than 525 positions over the next six years, reinforcing the state’s ambitions as a hub for clean energy innovation.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich welcomed the decision, describing it as “a win for our residents, bringing hundreds of good-paying jobs and strengthening our position as a center for innovation in clean energy and advanced technology.” He credited Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s leadership for ensuring the state remains competitive for transformative projects.

The Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) played a key role, guiding X-energy through local incentives, site selection, and workforce connections. MCEDC Board Chair Elana Fine noted that the outcome was the result of “months of close collaboration” and highlighted programs such as the MOVE Grant and Job Creation Fund that aligned with the company’s growth strategy.

Gaithersburg has also contributed to the expansion through its Economic Development Toolbox program. Mayor Jud Ashman emphasized the advantages of the new location, citing its high visibility from I-270 and proximity to amenities in the Rio center.

Beyond its new headquarters, X-energy is opening a 90,000-square-foot facility in Frederick for non-nuclear testing and prototyping of advanced reactor components, an investment designed to strengthen its innovation pipeline.

“X-energy was founded in Maryland, and we are proud to call this state our home as we enter a period of unprecedented growth,” said CEO J. Clay Sell. “We look forward to building on the state’s long history of nuclear innovation and making Maryland a national leader in next-generation nuclear technology.”
