The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) has appointed Mike Sfraga as interim chancellor, effective Sept. 1, following the departure of Dan White. The decision was announced by University of Alaska President Pat Pitney.
Sfraga brings deep institutional and Arctic expertise to the role. He previously served as the founding director of the Polar Institute at the Wilson Center and was the U.S. ambassador-at-large for Arctic affairs under the Biden administration. A UAF alumnus, Sfraga earned his doctorate at the university and has held numerous leadership positions across the UA system, including vice chancellor and associate dean.

President Pitney emphasized Sfraga’s familiarity with the university’s mission and its role in Arctic research, noting, “Mike’s experience in higher education leadership and his deep understanding of UAF’s place in Arctic science make him uniquely suited for this transitional period.”
The appointment comes as the university prepares for a national search for a permanent chancellor, expected to conclude in 2025. Sfraga’s tenure is anticipated to focus on strengthening UAF’s position as a global leader in Arctic research and policy, while maintaining academic continuity for students and faculty.
UAF plays a key role in national and international Arctic science, serving as a hub for climate research, indigenous studies, and geopolitical dialogue. Sfraga’s interim leadership is expected to support the university’s continued growth in these areas during a critical time for both the institution and the region.
