Lenovo to invest $77M in North Carolina expansion

Lenovo will invest $77 million to expand its manufacturing and fulfillment facility in Whitsett, North Carolina, creating more than 400 new jobs in Guilford County. The project will expand the company’s server manufacturing and fulfillment operations, strengthening North Carolina’s position as a hub for advanced technology and supply chain innovation.

Ryan McCurdy, president of Lenovo North America and North America site leader, said the decision reflects both customer demand and the region’s strengths. “Our desire to further expand here is driven by strong customer demand and the strength of the region’s connectivity, workforce, and business infrastructure, meaning we can deliver to customers more quickly and efficiently,” McCurdy said.

The Whitsett facility, first opened in 2007, is part of Lenovo’s global/local strategy, which balances worldwide scale with regional delivery capabilities. North Carolina is one of more than 30 Lenovo manufacturing locations in 11 markets worldwide.

Economic leaders welcomed the expansion as a milestone for the Piedmont Triad’s growing tech sector. “Given Lenovo’s long history in North Carolina, we are particularly pleased that they have again chosen to expand their operations here,” said Chris Chung, CEO of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. “With our skilled labor force, strategic location, and pro-business climate, North Carolina is well-positioned to support this kind of transformative investment.”

Sherri Thomas, chair of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, added that the move reflects the region’s momentum. “This announcement is a reflection of the partnerships and talent that make our region a place where great companies want to grow,” she said.

The project was supported by the Guilford County Economic Development Alliance, alongside the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, High Point Economic Development Corporation, EDPNC, North Carolina Department of Commerce, Duke Energy, Guilford Technical Community College, and Guilford Works.
