California startup JetZero partners with Japan Airlines

California aerospace startup JetZero has partnered with Japan Airlines (JAL) to advance the development of its blended-wing passenger aircraft, a next-generation jet designed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% compared with today’s commercial aircraft. The partnership, announced following the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, will see Japan Airlines provide operational expertise as JetZero works toward launching commercial service in the early 2030s. Founded in Long Beach, California, JetZero is developing the Z4, a blended-wing-body aircraft capable of carrying around 250 passengers over distances of up to 5,750 miles (9,250 km). Unlike conventional “tube-and-wing” aircraft, the Z4 features a wide, wing-shaped fuselage that generates lift across much of the aircraft’s structure, reducing aerodynamic drag and significantly improving fuel efficiency. If successful, the design could cut fuel consumption by between 30% and 50%, lowering airline operating costs while reducing carbon emissions. Japan Airlines will contribute expertise in flight operations, maintenance, ground handling and cabin design, helping ensure the aircraft can operate efficiently within existing airport infrastructure. “Our collaboration with Japan Airlines represents an important step toward bringing blended-wing aircraft into commercial service,” said Tom O’Leary, JetZero’s co-founder and CEO. The project has also attracted significant backing from the U.S. Air Force, which awarded JetZero US$235 million to develop a full-scale demonstrator. JetZero’s concept builds on decades of research into blended-wing-body aircraft by organisations including NASA, Boeing and Airbus, but aims to become the first company to bring the design into large-scale commercial aviation.

For California, the project reinforces the state’s position as a global centre for aerospace innovation, sustainable aviation and advanced manufacturing, with JetZero seeking to reshape the future of long-haul air travel through lower fuel consumption and more efficient aircraft design.
