Spearheaded by the Commerce Lexington team, Central Kentucky has cultivated a unique approach to regional economic development by prioritizing collaboration across its nine-county network. This coordinated strategy has positioned the area as a model for fostering international partnerships and attracting global investment, especially from Japan.
Jack Conner, Executive Director at Georgetown/Scott County Chamber of Commerce, attributes their success to deep-rooted trust and regional collaboration.

“When the region grows, we all grow. Companies don’t see county lines—they see the opportunity,” Conner explained.
This ethos has not only bolstered local industries but also attracted major players like Toyota, whose Georgetown plant remains the largest of its kind globally. Since its establishment in 1985, Toyota has contributed $150 billion in total investment to the U.S. economy, with significant reinvestments in Central Kentucky.
Commerce Lexington’s team has successfully positioned Central Kentucky as a leader in workforce education and innovation. Boasting 10 colleges and universities, the region ranks 16th in the U.S. for bachelor’s degree attainment and 13th for advanced degrees. With nearly 40% of residents holding at least a bachelor’s degree, the region is well-equipped to support advanced sectors like biotech and manufacturing, which are projected to grow by 12% nationally by 2030, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The region’s infrastructure further enhances its appeal. Situated at the intersection of major interstates I-64 and I-75, Central Kentucky offers unparalleled logistics advantages. Toyota recently announced a $1 billion investment in a state-of-the-art paint facility and a $1.3 billion expansion for SUV battery production, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and technological innovation.
Beyond economic metrics, the region excels in fostering cultural connections. Japan is Kentucky’s largest foreign investor, with over 200 Japanese-owned facilities operating statewide. Regular outreach trips to Japan and a shared value system emphasizing trust and partnership have solidified these ties.
As Commerce Lexington continues to champion regional growth, its unified strategy serves as a testament to the power of partnerships in driving global investment and local prosperity.
