Jeremiah Shinn begins tenure as University of Montana’s 20th president
The University of Montana has officially welcomed Dr. Jeremiah Shinn as its 20th president, marking the beginning of a new leadership chapter for the state’s flagship public university.
Shinn assumed the role on July 1 after serving as interim president of Boise State University, where he led initiatives focused on student success, campus partnerships, and expanding access to higher education.
His appointment comes as universities across the United States continue adapting to changing workforce needs, shifting student expectations, and increasing pressure to demonstrate the value of higher education.
“It’s my goal to lead UM in a way that makes this state proud,” Shinn said. “Together, we will build on our strengths to make UM even more aligned with the needs of students and the realities of today’s workforce.”
Montana Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian said Shinn brings a strong track record of student-focused leadership and is well positioned to build on the university’s recent momentum.
“President Shinn is a proven leader whose commitment to the success of students is unwavering,” Christian said.
Shinn takes office as the University of Montana prepares to welcome its incoming class later this year, with a focus on aligning academic programs and student outcomes with evolving labour market demands.
“Our students deserve a university built for the world they’re entering, not the one we’re leaving behind,” Shinn said. “At a time when the value of higher education is being questioned, UM will meet this moment.”
Before serving as Boise State’s interim president, Shinn was the university’s Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. He also previously served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Louisiana State University.
He holds a Ph.D. from Eastern Michigan University, a Master of Arts from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science from Arkansas Tech University.
As president, Shinn will lead the University of Montana’s efforts to strengthen workforce development, expand student opportunities, and reinforce the institution’s role as a driver of talent, research, and economic growth across the state.
