Scout Space will invest more than $1 million to expand its operations in Fairfax County, Virginia, creating 31 new jobs and establishing a new manufacturing facility in Merrifield.

The expansion will add 2,650 square feet of manufacturing space to support the company’s growing portfolio of space domain awareness technologies, including advanced sensors, autonomy software, and data platforms used for satellite operations.

Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Reston, Scout Space develops technologies designed to improve visibility, coordination, and safety in orbit. The company serves both commercial and government customers and is currently supporting missions for the U.S. Space Force.

The announcement comes as demand for satellite monitoring and in-orbit services continues to grow, driving investment across the broader space economy.

“Fairfax County offers an exceptional environment for innovation, talent, and collaboration, making it the ideal location for Scout Space’s continued growth,” said Scout Space CEO Josiah Gruber. “This expansion reflects both the increasing demand for advanced space domain awareness capabilities and our commitment to building the technologies that enable safer, more dynamic operations in orbit.”

Scout Space is also working with Blue Origin to integrate its flagship sensor technology into the inaugural mission of Blue Ring, a multi-mission spacecraft designed to support payload hosting and in-orbit services.

Local leaders said the project further strengthens Fairfax County’s position as a hub for aerospace innovation, defense technology, and advanced manufacturing.

Fairfax County Board Chairman Jeff McKay said Scout Space’s expansion reflects the momentum of the region’s innovation economy and highlights the county’s growing role in supporting next-generation space and national security technologies.

The project was supported by the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. The Commonwealth of Virginia will assist the company’s growth through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program (VJIP), which provides recruitment, training, and workforce development support for expanding businesses.

FCEDA President and CEO Victor Hoskins said the expansion demonstrates the strength of Fairfax County’s technology ecosystem, access to skilled talent, and proximity to key federal agencies and industry partners.

Governor Abigail Spanberger said Virginia’s aerospace sector continues to benefit from the state’s highly skilled workforce and strategic location near major federal and defense institutions, making it an attractive destination for companies operating at the forefront of satellite and space technologies.

The investment adds to Fairfax County’s growing portfolio of aerospace and defense-related projects and reinforces Northern Virginia’s position as one of the United States’ leading centres for space technology innovation.
