Sophia university names Professor Miki Sugimura as first female president

Sophia University is set to make history with the appointment of Professor Miki Sugimura as its next president, marking the first time a woman will lead the institution since its founding in 1913. Professor Sugimura will begin her term on April 1, 2025, and serve through March 31, 2029. A distinguished academic and leader, Professor Sugimura brings a wealth of expertise to the role. She earned her Bachelor of Education from Ochanomizu University in 1985 and completed her Ph.D. in Education at the University of Tokyo in 1998. Her academic journey includes over two decades at Sophia University, where she has held various positions, including Vice President for Academic Exchange and Global Academic Affairs. Professor Sugimura’s leadership extends beyond Sophia University. She currently serves as a Visiting Fellow at the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development, Vice Chair of ProSPER Net for postgraduate sustainability education, Visiting Professor at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, and Senior Program Officer at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Research Center for Science Systems. Her appointment signals a forward-looking chapter for Sophia University, emphasizing global academic exchange, sustainability, and leadership excellence.
