Southwire, one of North America’s largest wire and cable manufacturers, will invest more than US$256 million to expand its manufacturing operations in Starkville, Mississippi, creating 128 new jobs as it increases production capacity to meet growing demand for electrification and data center infrastructure.

The expansion will add approximately 380,000 square feet to the company’s Starkville campus, making it the largest single economic development project in the city’s history. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with the expanded facility scheduled to reach full production by 2028.

The investment forms part of Southwire’s broader US$2 billion modernization strategy, aimed at strengthening its manufacturing network across North America.

“This expansion represents another meaningful step in Southwire’s long-term strategy to modernize our operations, strengthen our manufacturing footprint and continue delivering exceptional service to our customers,” said Ganesh Ramaswamy, President and CEO of Southwire. “Starkville has been an important part of Southwire’s story for decades, and this investment reflects our confidence in the team, the community and the opportunities ahead.”

Founded in 1950 and headquartered in Georgia, Southwire is a US$9.7 billion company employing more than 9,000 people worldwide. The company manufactures a wide range of products, including building wire, utility cables, electrical components and engineered power solutions that support residential, commercial, industrial and utility markets across North America.

According to the company, the Starkville expansion will improve manufacturing efficiency, workplace safety and product quality while increasing capacity to support rising demand driven by grid modernization, electrification and the rapid growth of AI-powered data centers.

“Across Southwire, we are making significant investments to modernize our footprint and position our company for long-term growth,” said Rohan Kelkar, Executive Vice President, Power and Industrial. “This expansion helps build the capacity needed to meet growing demand driven by electrification, market growth and the rapid expansion of data centers.”

Southwire has operated in Starkville since acquiring the facility in 1989. Originally established by Phelps-Dodge in 1979, the campus previously underwent a major expansion in 2010 with the addition of an on-site distribution center.

Mississippi leaders said the investment highlights the state’s growing appeal for advanced manufacturers.

“Southwire’s quarter-of-a-billion-dollar investment and the nearly 130 jobs it will create are another example of the incredible momentum we’re seeing across Mississippi,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “This project is more proof that Mississippi gets the job done.”

Local officials also described the project as a major milestone for the region.

“Southwire’s decision to continue investing in Starkville is the result of collaboration and a shared commitment to creating an environment where manufacturers can succeed,” said Meryl Fisackerly, CEO of the Golden Triangle Development LINK. “We’re grateful for Southwire’s continued confidence in Starkville, Oktibbeha County and the entire Golden Triangle region.”
