The University of Montana has appointed Dr. Jeremiah Shinn as its 20th president, following a national search that attracted more than 70 candidates. Shinn will assume the role on July 1, 2026.

The appointment was confirmed by the Montana Board of Regents after what officials described as a comprehensive and expedited selection process aimed at maintaining institutional momentum while securing long-term leadership.
“I am honored to be named the 20th president of the University of Montana and eager to get started,” said Shinn. “I am inspired by the remarkable students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members who make UM so special, and I look forward to joining this extraordinary team to build on its strong foundation and shape a bright future together.”
Shinn currently serves as interim president of Boise State University, where he has led initiatives focused on student engagement, expanded access to education, and strengthened partnerships across campus. His prior leadership roles include vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Boise State, as well as vice president for student affairs at Louisiana State University.
Montana Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian said Shinn consistently emerged as a leading candidate throughout the selection process, citing his leadership experience, collaborative approach, and focus on student success. The process was supported by national search firm AGB Search and a presidential advisory group.
Board of Regents Chair Todd Buchanan noted that Shinn’s leadership style and understanding of the university’s role in statewide development were key factors in the decision. Officials emphasized that his appointment aligns with the institution’s strategic direction and long-term priorities.
Shinn holds a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Eastern Michigan University, a master’s degree in higher education from University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree from Arkansas Tech University.
His appointment comes as the University of Montana continues efforts to strengthen academic programs, student outcomes, and regional impact through leadership continuity and institutional growth.
