A new survey commissioned by Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US LLC (METUS) reveals that heat pump ownership is on the rise among U.S. homeowners, with 90% of current owners recommending the technology to others. The 2024 Heat Pumps & Homeowners Index, which surveyed over 1,000 homeowners, highlights increasing awareness and adoption of heat pumps, with many citing energy efficiency and cost savings as key benefits. The study was published in February 2025.
According to the findings, 55% of heat pump owners identified greater energy efficiency as the primary advantage, while 41% pointed to improved heating performance and 39% cited cost savings. The report also found that HVAC contractors played a crucial role in adoption, with 82% of respondents stating that their contractor was “somewhat” or “very influential” in their decision to install a heat pump. Additionally, financial incentives contributed to the growing adoption, as more homeowners took advantage of federal and state tax credits for home energy improvements.
Energy efficiency remains a top concern for homeowners, regardless of their current heating and cooling systems. The survey found that 93% of homeowners with conventional HVAC or furnace systems expressed concern about rising utility costs, and 88% of all respondents believed that heat pumps are more energy efficient than traditional heating and cooling systems. Awareness of heat pump technology has also grown, with 32% of homeowners reporting a strong understanding of heat pumps in 2024, compared to just 23% in 2023.
METUS CEO Mark Kuntz emphasized the importance of educating homeowners on the benefits of heat pumps, particularly as financial incentives and efficiency concerns drive interest. “We continue to educate homeowners about the advantages heat pumps have over conventional HVAC systems,” Kuntz said. “As homeowners become more knowledgeable about the numerous benefits of heat pump technology, including potential tax credits, rebates, and energy efficiency, we believe they will increasingly install these all-electric, all-climate, sustainable HVAC systems in their homes.”

The Heat Pumps & Homeowners Index was conducted in November 2024, surveying more than 1,000 homeowners across the U.S., including more than 300 who had installed a heat pump. The survey included participants from a range of age groups and regions, with a margin of error of ±3% and a confidence level of 95%.
