The University of Florida (UF) Board of Trustees has unanimously selected Dr. Stuart Bell as the institution’s 14th president, marking a significant leadership transition at one of the United States’ leading public research universities.
Bell’s appointment is subject to ratification by the Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the State University System of Florida. A final vote is expected on June 25.
The selection concludes a national presidential search that considered hundreds of potential candidates before identifying Bell as the preferred choice. He was announced as the sole finalist in May following a recommendation from UF’s Presidential Search Committee.
“The Board of Trustees’ unanimous vote today is a resounding and undeniable show of support for Dr. Stuart Bell,” said UF Board of Trustees Chair Mori Hosseini. “His experience and leadership will be critical in taking UF to the very highest ranks of U.S. higher education.”
Bell brings more than a decade of executive leadership experience in higher education. Most recently, he served as President of the University of Alabama from 2015 to 2025, overseeing a period of institutional growth, research expansion, and academic development.
Prior to that role, Bell served as Provost and Professor of Engineering at Louisiana State University and as Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas.
A recognised engineering researcher, Bell’s academic work has focused on natural gas and combustion engine technologies. He was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame in 2023 and holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from Texas A&M University.
The appointment comes as major research universities across the United States compete for talent, research funding, industry partnerships, and national rankings. Leadership transitions at flagship institutions such as UF often play a significant role in shaping long-term strategies for innovation, workforce development, and economic impact.
Rahul Patel, Vice Chair of the UF Board of Trustees and Chair of the Presidential Search Committee, said Bell emerged as the strongest candidate during the selection process.
“Dr. Bell was selected from among hundreds of potential candidates and quickly rose to the top as the best choice,” Patel said.
Throughout his career, Bell has held leadership positions with numerous academic and professional organisations, including the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Foundation, and several national science and engineering advisory bodies.
Bell is expected to succeed Interim President Donald Landry following final approval by the Florida Board of Governors.
“I am extremely honored and humbled by the Board of Trustees vote today,” Bell said. “The University of Florida is exceptional in every respect, and I know there’s no limit to what we can all accomplish together.”
Founded in 1853, the University of Florida is one of the largest public universities in the United States and serves as a major research, innovation, and workforce development institution for the state of Florida.
