Google will invest $1.5 billion to expand its data centre campus in Jackson County, Alabama, marking one of the largest economic development investments in Northeast Alabama’s history.

The expansion will take place over the next two years at Google’s Bridgeport campus, located on the former Tennessee Valley Authority Widows Creek coal plant site. The project is expected to create additional jobs, support local businesses, and strengthen the region’s position as a growing hub for digital infrastructure investment.

According to Google, the investment will build on the hundreds of full-time jobs already supported by the Jackson County facility while generating further opportunities for contractors, suppliers, and service providers across the region. More than 1,000 contract workers are expected to be involved during construction phases.

Local leaders described the announcement as a transformational milestone for Jackson County’s economy.

“This is probably one of the largest announcements that have been made in Jackson County,” said Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter. “It’s generational change.”

Beyond the facility expansion, Google announced a series of community investments focused on workforce development, education, and energy affordability.

The company will establish a $2 million Energy Impact Fund in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama. The initiative will support weatherisation and energy-efficiency upgrades for schools and income-qualified households, primarily within Jackson County.

Google also committed $550,000 to provide STEM education kits for students in Years 4 to 8 across the Jackson County School District over the next five years.

The education initiative builds on Google’s existing workforce and talent development efforts in the region, which include support for robotics competitions, career academies, and technology-focused learning programs.

The expansion reflects continued growth in demand for data centre capacity as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital services drive new infrastructure investment across the United States.

Google’s Jackson County campus has become one of the company’s key data centre operations in the Southeast since opening in 2019. The facility supports Google’s global network of cloud and digital services while contributing to local employment and economic activity.

As data centre development increasingly draws attention to energy and resource consumption, Google highlighted ongoing investments in energy efficiency and sustainability. The company reported that the Jackson County campus operates at a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating significantly below the global industry average, reflecting efforts to minimise energy used for cooling and facility operations.

Google has also contracted more than 300 megawatts of new electricity generation capacity across the Tennessee Valley region, including an agreement with Kairos Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority to develop advanced nuclear energy projects that will help support future operations in Alabama and Tennessee.

In addition, the company has partnered with conservation organisations to support water stewardship and watershed restoration projects in Northeast Alabama, including environmental work within the Paint Rock River Watershed.

Since announcing its initial investment in Jackson County in 2018, Google has continued to expand its presence in the region. The latest $1.5 billion commitment further reinforces Alabama’s growing role in attracting large-scale technology and digital infrastructure projects while creating new opportunities for workforce development, education, and long-term economic growth.
