Japan and U.S. Unite to Strengthen Cybersecurity Amid Rising Threats

To combat the escalating risks of cyberattacks, Japan and the United States are strengthening their cybersecurity alliance. Starting April 2025, Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) will collaborate with Mitre, a U.S.-based nonprofit specializing in national cybersecurity strategies, through a newly established research facility in Washington, D.C.

The estimated cost of cyberattacks globally in 2025 is estimated to reach $10.5 trillion (CISCO, 2024).

The partnership will focus on analyzing cyberattacks that exploit artificial intelligence. While the U.S. brings cutting-edge technology to the table, Japan contributes extensive data on incidents from non-English-speaking regions. This collaboration addresses a critical gap as improved translation tools enable hackers to share tactics across languages, expanding global vulnerabilities.

Global cyberattacks have surged, rising 75% year-on-year in Q3 2024, according to Check Point Software. In Japan, sophisticated threats such as deepfake fraud and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks are on the rise. Recognizing the urgency, Tokyo plans to introduce guidelines to counter AI-driven cyberattacks by fiscal 2025.

However, readiness remains uneven. While 70% of Japanese companies acknowledge growing cybersecurity challenges, only 20% intend to adopt advanced countermeasures, lagging behind the U.S. (46%) and China (71%). This underscores the need for robust defense strategies and greater industry participation.

By combining resources and expertise, Japan and the U.S. aim to bolster their collective ability to detect, mitigate, and counter complex cyber threats, protecting critical infrastructure and emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in addressing global security challenges.
