Maryland has secured two major business investments across its technology and life sciences sectors, with AI company Cloudforce expanding its headquarters in Prince George's County and Bora Pharmaceuticals establishing new biologics manufacturing operations in Montgomery County through a US$122.5 million acquisition. Together, the projects reinforce Maryland's position as one of the United States' leading hubs for artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and biotechnology. Cloudforce, a Maryland-based AI platform company, will double the size of its headquarters at National Harbor by leasing an additional 15,000 square feet of office space. The expansion will retain more than 130 existing employees while creating 250 new jobs over the next five years. Originally founded as a Microsoft cloud specialist, Cloudforce has evolved into an AI platform company with its flagship secure AI platform, nebulaONE®, serving higher education and public sector organisations. Meanwhile, Maryland’s life sciences sector continues to grow after Taiwan-based Bora Pharmaceuticals completed its US$122.5 million acquisition of MacroGenics’ biologics manufacturing operations in Rockville, officially launching the new facility in July.
The investment gives Bora an FDA-approved biologics manufacturing facility capable of supporting both clinical and commercial-scale production. The company will retain 140 employees from the former MacroGenics operation and plans to add further jobs and capital investment as it expands.
The acquisition strengthens Montgomery County’s reputation as one of the country’s leading biotechnology and contract drug manufacturing hubs. The county is home to hundreds of life sciences companies and benefits from its proximity to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and a highly specialised biomedical workforce.
“Cloudforce’s expansion and continued commitment to Maryland is a win for our state’s workers, students, and our future,” said Governor Wes Moore. “Our administration is making historic investments to support partnerships with world-class leaders like Cloudforce.”
Jared Smith, President and CEO of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation, said Bora’s investment demonstrates the continued strength of the region’s life sciences ecosystem.
“Bora Biologics’ decision to invest in Rockville demonstrates the strength of our ecosystem and the growing demand for advanced biomanufacturing capabilities,” he said.
