Mississippi State University (MSU) has significantly bolstered Mississippi's economy, generating an estimated $3.9 billion annually, as revealed in a recent study by MSU's National Strategic Planning & Analysis Research Center (NSPARC). This marks a substantial increase from the $1.8 billion reported in 2019, underscoring MSU's expanding influence across the state. MSU President Mark E. Keenum emphasized, "This report quantifies what we have long known—Mississippi State University is a core economic driver across the state. Our world-class faculty and staff work hard every day to move Mississippi forward and educate the students and future leaders we need in our state and nation." Research and innovation: Catalysts for economic growth A key driver of MSU's economic impact is its robust research portfolio. With $320 million in research expenditures for fiscal year 2024, the university accounts for more than half of the state's total R&D spending among higher education institutions. This investment translates directly into $320 million in income for Mississippians and supports 5,630 jobs statewide. MSU's research encompasses basic science, applied solutions to stakeholder challenges, workforce training, and industry support, positioning Mississippi for an innovation-based economy.
