Bratislava’s Dúbravka district recently hosted the third annual Sakura and Art Festival, celebrating the enduring friendship between Slovakia and Japan through a vibrant showcase of cultural exchange. Held on the 5th of April 2025 at the Eugen Suchoň Elementary School, the event attracted attendees with its rich program highlighting Japanese traditions and arts.
The festival featured a concert of Japanese songs performed by pianist Mayuko Takine and soprano Hana Friedová, martial arts demonstrations including aikido and judo by Kurilla Budokan, and interactive workshops on origami, calligraphy, and traditional Japanese board games like shogi and go. These activities provided attendees with immersive experiences into Japanese culture.

A significant aspect of the festival is its connection to the 2020 initiative commemorating the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Slovakia, during which approximately 500 cherry blossom trees were planted across Slovakia as symbols of friendship. The festival continues to honor this legacy, fostering cultural exchange and mutual appreciation.
The Embassy of Japan in Slovakia expressed hope that such events would deepen the friendship between the two nations through the shared appreciation of cherry blossoms.
As the Sakura and Art Festival continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the strong cultural ties and mutual respect between Slovakia and Japan, bringing communities together to celebrate the beauty of tradition and the promise of continued collaboration.
In 2023, Slovakia exported goods worth approximately $386.5 million to Japan, with vehicles accounting for over $324 million of this trade .
