Bulgaria and Japan deepen strategic economic ties ahead of Osaka EXPO 2025

In a strategic move to bolster Bulgaria’s presence at Expo 2025 in Osaka, the Japan-Bulgaria Business Association (JBBA), in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Agency (BSMEPA), hosted a business breakfast on March 24, 2025. The event convened high-ranking officials, including President Rumen Radev, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Innovation and Growth Tomislav Donchev, Minister of Economy and Industry Petar Dilov, Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh, and Japanese Ambassador Hisashi Michigami, alongside business leaders and stakeholders .

The gathering focused on outlining Bulgaria’s strategic direction for participation in Expo 2025, themed “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” President Radev emphasized the enduring partnership between Bulgaria and Japan, highlighting Japan as a model for socio-economic development. He expressed readiness to elevate bilateral relations to a strategic partnership during his upcoming visit to Japan in May 2025 .

Deputy Prime Minister Donchev acknowledged the resurgence of Japanese business interest in Bulgaria, citing Toshiba’s involvement in the rehabilitation of the Chaira Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant as a testament to renewed collaboration. He advocated for Bulgaria’s repositioning as a hub for innovation and technology, beyond its traditional exports .

Ambassador Michigami highlighted the potential for Expo 2025 to usher in a new era of Bulgarian-Japanese relations, noting the participation of 158 countries and the expected attendance of 28 million visitors. He underscored the expo’s role in fostering global cooperation and technological advancement .

JBBA Chairman Todor Kesimov unveiled plans for Bulgaria’s interactive national pavilion, situated in the prestigious Zone A, between the pavilions of Singapore and the Netherlands. The pavilion aims to showcase Bulgaria’s blend of tradition and innovation, offering opportunities for business partnerships and investment .

Iskren Krastev, a key figure in developing Bulgaria’s pavilion concept, introduced the motto “Evolving with Nature,” reflecting Bulgaria’s commitment to harmonizing technological progress with environmental stewardship. He highlighted Bulgaria’s achievements in AI, space technology, and sustainable industries, positioning the country as a leader in innovation .

As preparations for Expo 2025 advance, Bulgaria’s active engagement underscores its dedication to strengthening international ties and showcasing its potential on the global stage.
