Bulgaria and Japan are strengthening their economic partnership, focusing on high-tech industries, energy, and infrastructure development. This collaboration was highlighted during a recent business forum in Sofia, organized by the Japan-Bulgaria Business Association and attended by Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and Japanese Ambassador Hisashi Michigami.
President Radev emphasized Bulgaria’s potential as a strategic partner for Japan in Eastern and Central Europe, citing the country’s skilled workforce and favorable investment climate. He noted that Japanese investments in Bulgaria’s high-tech sectors are already contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
“For us, Japan is the strategic partner for the region of East Asia, mainly because we are already using its investments in the field of high technologies and in the economy with high added value,” Radev said.

In 2024, bilateral trade between Bulgaria and Japan reached approximately USD 269.5 million. However, both nations acknowledge the potential for increased economic exchange. Minister of Economy and Industry Petar Dilov expressed optimism that Bulgaria’s participation in the upcoming Osaka EXPO 2025 would further enhance trade relations and attract Japanese investment.
Ambassador Michigami highlighted ongoing joint projects, including collaborations in energy and infrastructure. He expressed hope that these initiatives would usher in a new era of cooperation between the two countries.
Bulgaria’s presence at EXPO 2025 in Osaka, scheduled from April 13 to October 13, will feature a national pavilion showcasing the country’s advancements in science, technology, and culture. The event is expected to attract over 28 million visitors, providing a platform for Bulgaria to present itself as a hub for innovation and investment in the region.
This renewed focus on bilateral relations reflects a shared commitment to fostering economic growth and technological advancement, positioning both nations for a collaborative future.
