Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya meets Luxembourg’s Bettel in Tokyo to advance bilateral ties

On April 11, 2025, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya met with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel in Tokyo to discuss strengthening bilateral relations. The meeting, held during Bettel’s visit for the opening ceremony of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, focused on enhancing cooperation in various sectors and commemorating the upcoming 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations in 2027.

Minister Iwaya expressed gratitude for Luxembourg’s commitment to Expo 2025 and emphasized the importance of deepening ties in anticipation of the centennial milestone. He highlighted the close relationship between the Imperial Household of Japan and the Grand Ducal Household of Luxembourg as a foundation for further collaboration.

Foreign Minister Bettel conveyed his pleasure in visiting Japan again and reiterated Luxembourg’s dedication to contributing to the success of Expo 2025. He acknowledged the significance of the longstanding relationship between the two countries and expressed interest in expanding cooperation.

The ministers agreed to promote collaboration in the aerospace sector, building upon existing partnerships. They also discussed enhancing youth exchanges through the working holiday program initiated last year, aiming to foster greater cultural understanding and people-to-people connections.

In addition to bilateral matters, the discussion encompassed international issues, including the situations in Ukraine and East Asia. Both ministers affirmed their commitment to cooperating on policies concerning North Korea, addressing nuclear and missile concerns, as well as the abductions issue.

This meeting underscores the shared commitment of Japan and Luxembourg to strengthening their partnership across various domains, reflecting a mutual dedication to global cooperation and regional stability.
