Melissa Hunt has been appointed as the new president and CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDA), effective April 28. A familiar face within the organization, Hunt brings nearly two decades of experience in economic development and a longstanding history of involvement with WEDA.

Hunt replaces Kathryn Berger, who had led the Kimberly-based nonprofit since August 2024. In a statement, Berger praised Hunt’s leadership qualities: “Melissa is the right leader at the right time for WEDA. She brings deep experience, a collaborative spirit, and a true passion for serving WEDA’s members. I’ve worked alongside Melissa for years and know she will lead the organization with integrity and vision.”
Hunt previously served as WEDA’s board chair and has been a member since 2006. Her early career included a role as regional economic development director for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. In 2022, she received WEDA’s Andy Lisak Young Professional Award, recognizing her contributions to the state’s economic development efforts.
“I’m honored by the Board’s trust in me, and I am excited to build upon WEDA’s legacy and 50 years of success,” Hunt said in a news release.
Founded to support economic growth across Wisconsin, WEDA focuses on training, networking, and advocacy for development professionals. The nonprofit generated $530,244 in total revenue in 2023, with nearly 70% of its income stemming from fee-for-service activities such as professional training programs, events, and membership dues, according to its latest IRS Form 990.
Hunt’s appointment comes at a time when economic development organizations are playing a critical role in workforce expansion, business retention, and community revitalization initiatives across the state. With her leadership, WEDA aims to continue strengthening Wisconsin’s economic infrastructure and equipping development professionals with the tools they need to succeed.
